The King and his family were growing increasingly uncomfortable with life in Paris. Louis XVI was shy and didn't like being constantly watched and search for by the public. Whenever the King or his family tried to leave the Palace, it had to be done quickly because so many people would crowd around the carriage that the horses couldn't move. Leaving was actually very frighting for the king and his family. "Life had become unbearable." The queen, Marie Antoinette, soon came up with the idea of an escape. The King and Queen decided that General Bouillé and his troops could help them on their way. On the night of June 20, Madame Tourzel, the governess of the children, dressed as the Baroness de Korff. The king's two children were dressed as her children and Louis and Marie Antionette were both dressed in dark clothes.

On the night of June 20, 1791, somewhere between ten o'clock and twelve o'clock, Alex von Fersen, driving an average carriage, picked up the royal family. They drove to the edge of Paris then switched to another carriage called the berline. The king and his family were very quiet as they rode through Paris, but once they got into the country side Louis XVI grew careless and his guards, who were set at specific intervals in the journey by Marquis de Bouillé became confused and were out of place. The next day, they were having a smooth ride and thought that they were in better shape than they were actually in. They stopped for long meals and did not stick to the crucial schedule.

Louis XVI's troops were growing increasingly aware that they were being noticed by the towns people and lost the location of the King's carriage in the process. What the king and his family didn't know was that their was gradually being uncovered. At a town called Sainte-Menehould, Louis was recognized by Jean-Babtiste Drouet, the town postmaster. When the carriage left at 7:00 P.M., Drouet and a friend took off across the large expanse of the country to a village in Lorraine called Varennes. The royal family stopped at 11:00 P.M. to wait for the cavalry escort, but because of the king's long lunches, they were three hours late. The calvary had given up and headed to Varennes for the night. Drouet knew he had to do something about the King and his family so he quickly sent for the National Guard. When they arrived, they took the King and his family back to Paris with them (almost as if they were prisoners).

Louis XVI, on the other hand, was left in poorer conditions. His people distrusted him, and his power couldn't be regained. The next set of events came when France declared war on Austria. Marie Antionette started doing a little scheming of her own. She began giving away France's strategic plans to Austria. She did this in hopes that Austria would win the war and destroy the revolutionaries as well. When the people found out, they were enraged. They imprisoned Mary for her duplicity during the war, and imprisoned Louis for his tyranny during peacetime. In the end, they were both put to death.
